The Health benefits of Olive Oil and olives - The Sicilian Way

Health Benefits of Olives

As you are in the section on Olives. The Olives we offer aren’t marinated in brine (which we have agreed here at the Sicilian Way, brine ruins the taste of the olives). They are marinated in Olive Oil which is a natural preservative and maintains the amazing true olive flavour that we all love. Sicilians are masters in producing great quality olives. So much so that the famous Nocellara Del Belice is protected and can only be grown in the region of Castelvetrano. With us introducing these olives to the Wirral and Nationally across the UK, we are giving you the true experience which includes great health benefits. A double whammy I’d say.

What are Olives?

Olives are small fruit with a hard, inedible stone that are mostly grown across the Mediterranean, but also in California and other enriched soil and high-heat climates. They come in varying shades of green and black. The colour of the olive is depending on when they are picked – green being unripe and black, fully ripe.

Olives are typically high in salt due to the fact that they are cured or packaged in brine or salt water. Not ours! Our Euvlio Olives are packed in an airtight bag, and filled with a beautiful marinate of Olive oil, Chilli, Parsley, Oregano and a hint of Fennel. Here at The Sicilian Way, we don’t believe in Brine.

Top 5 Health Benefits of adding Olives to your diet

Olives are a great Antioxidant food!

Free radicals are the cause of many deteriorating properties such as in plastic, paint, art etc. They also play a deteriorating effect on the Human body too. Free Radicals contribute to early aging and also makes the human body more prone to diseases such as strokes, cancer, and heart attacks.

Free radicals are molecules within your body with unpaired electrons; they’re on a quest to find another electron and are very reactive and damaging to surrounding molecules.

I guess you can say the antioxidants are successful blind dates to the free radicals. This is because Antioxidants can safely interact with Free radicals by giving up some of their electrons. This eradicates the free radical as it is now paired with an electron.

Olives are a great antioxidant which makes them a super-rich food! This means every time you eat Olives, they will release an incredible number of antioxidants to eradicate all of them pesky free radicals. Managing free radicals via intentional intake of antioxidants is a key part of healthy living and olives are a delicious way to do that.

Olives are super healthy for you!

Olives are one of the few foods out there that puts you in a calorie deficit by digesting them! Olives on average contain around 7-10 calories per olive (depending on the marinate. Our Eulivo olives are around 13 calories per olive due to our incredible marinate!) Maybe snacking in the evening isn’t so bad after all with a bowl of delicious olives!

Olives are also Anti-inflammatory

Just like our Olive Oil, Olives are a great anti-inflammatory. As we know inflammation is a cause of so many diseases and unfortunately, there are too many foods that increase this risk. Our Olives and Olive oil helps to dramatically reduce this and is a key to anyone on a health kick!

Olives contain anti-inflammatory compounds called oleocanthal which prevent the formation of inflammatory enzymes that could lead to diseases like arthritis and type 2 diabetes.

Olives are just good for your heart!

Olives are just that one food that just keeps on giving. They contain heart-healthy fats that your heart will say thank you for!

The main fatty acid that you find in Olive Oil is a monounsaturated fat called Oleic acid. This makes us 73% of the total oil content. The remaining fat content in olives is 15% saturated fats and 11% is polyunsaturated. Meaning plenty of Omega 6 and Omega 5 fatty acids which is very good for you!

The monounsaturated fat found in olives is the same good fat you find in nuts and avocados. Mono-unsaturated fat in the diet increases good cholesterol. I’d say Olives are almost classed as a superfood in my eyes!

Olives also help prevent infections! Wait… seriously?

Many people do not know this fact unless you work at The Sicilian Way, then again, it’s just me Danny. Olives are absolutely excellent at supporting your immune system’s fight against infections. This is of any sort of infection whether it is bacterial, fungal, or viral in origin. Olives have been used culturally for this purpose for a long time, including using olive leaves to manage topical wounds and infections. Olives even show potential in inhibiting the growth of the devastating bacteria MRSA- a strain resistant to many common prescription antibiotics.
